Importance of Team Sports

Importance of Team Sports

From our early days in school, we are encouraged to participate in team sports. While playing any sport is beneficial for our physical and mental well-being, team sports offer a unique sense of belonging and camaraderie.

Take basketball, for example. Each of the five players has a specific role. Without getting too technical, a person who may be short (yes, shorter people matter, too) is entrusted with advancing the ball and coordinating passes. The person also acts as the coach on the court.

Similarly, there are people who pick up rebounds and others who guard the opposition or shoot from within or outside the circle. Each skill is unique, and they are trained to be the best at the position given to them. The best-coordinated team usually scores more baskets.

The word coordination and specific skills are what we tend to recognize early on. You learn to value the contribution of each member and the criticality of each role in scoring more baskets. These aspects carry forward to our professional lives as well. We could be great at a particular skill(s), but an enterprise’s success story depends on how we play our part well and help others play their part in harmony.

So, be a part of a team sport – the lessons you learn (it does not matter if you win or lose) will take you far.
